The Black Templars

The Black Templars are faith made war, the most fervent and unyielding zealots among all the Space Marines. Where other Chapters garrison a home world and measure their strength against the Codex Astartes, the Templars keep no single fortress and heed no such limit. They are a crusade without end, a fleet of the faithful that has roamed the stars for ten thousand years, seeking heretic, alien, and daemon to put to the sword in the Emperor's name.

Sigismund and the First Crusade

The Black Templars trace their origin to Sigismund, first Emperor's Champion and the greatest swordsman of the Imperial Fists, the primarch Rogal Dorn's most devoted son. Sigismund fought at the very heart of the Siege of Terra, holding the walls against the traitor host and slaying champions of Chaos beyond counting. His faith in the Emperor was absolute, a burning certainty that set him apart even among his stern brethren.

When the Horus Heresy was ended and the Imperium turned to rebuilding, Dorn was commanded to divide his Legion as the new law demanded. To Sigismund fell a great host of the most zealous warriors, and rather than settle into a single Chapter, he took a vow to carry the war outward: to launch a crusade that would not end while a single enemy of Mankind still drew breath. Thus were the Black Templars born, from the union of Sigismund's faith and Dorn's iron resolve.

The Eternal Crusade

The defining truth of the Black Templars is the Eternal Crusade. Since the days of Sigismund they have never ceased campaigning, never stood down, never returned home to rest, for they have no home in the conventional sense. Their fortress-monasteries are their warships, vast crusading fleets that carry the faithful from war to war across the length and breadth of the galaxy.

This endless mobility makes the Templars a sword that can fall anywhere. A crusade may splinter into many smaller fleets, each pursuing its own campaign, or many may converge into a single overwhelming host when a great foe demands it. They answer to no fixed territory and no single call, driven instead by the sacred imperative to seek out the enemies of the Emperor wherever they hide and destroy them utterly. To join a Black Templars crusade is to swear away any hope of peace, and to embrace war as the whole purpose of one's existence.

The Zeal of the Faithful

No Chapter burns with a purer or more terrifying faith than the Black Templars. To them the Emperor is not merely a genetic father or a distant master but a living god, and their devotion shades into a fury that borders on fanaticism. They despise the mutant, the witch, and the alien with an intensity that leaves no room for negotiation or mercy, and they hurl themselves into close combat with the joy of warriors certain of their righteousness.

This zeal is both their strength and their peril. It makes them nigh unbreakable, able to endure horrors that would shatter lesser resolve, and it drives them to feats of berserk courage. Yet it also makes them uncompromising to a fault, quick to see heresy and slow to forgive it. The Black Templars wear their faith as openly as their heraldry, and in battle they are as much preachers as warriors, roaring litanies of hatred as they close upon the foe.

No Place for the Witch

Among the most distinctive traits of the Black Templars is their absolute rejection of psykers within their own ranks. The Chapter fields no Librarians, no sanctioned psychic warriors of the kind that other Space Marines rely upon. To the Templars, the powers of the warp are the doorway through which damnation enters the galaxy, and they will not open that door even in their own defence.

This prohibition springs from their fervent creed and, some say, from an ancient distrust dating to the earliest days of the Imperium, when the dangers of unchecked psychic power were laid bare. The Templars would sooner fight without such advantages than risk the taint of the warp corrupting one of their own. It is a stance that marks them apart from nearly every other Chapter, and one they hold with characteristic, unshakeable conviction.

Sword-Brotherhoods and Sacred Vows

The Black Templars organise themselves not by the companies of the Codex Astartes but into sword-brotherhoods, fighting fellowships that gather around a champion and pursue a shared campaign. These brotherhoods form and reform as crusades demand, giving the Chapter a fluid, martial structure suited to endless war.

Central to their culture are the vows they swear before battle, solemn oaths that bind a warrior to a particular pledge: to suffer no wound to turn him back, to accept no retreat, to slay a hated foe or die in the attempt. A Templar who takes a vow is honour-bound to fulfil it, and the taking of vows lends their warfare a ritual gravity, each battle becoming a sacred trial as much as a military one. Neophytes fight alongside veterans in these brotherhoods, learning the crusading life directly in the crucible of war, sworn as squires to the battle-brothers they serve.

An Army Beyond the Codex

Because they keep no single home world and recruit from every planet their crusades touch, the Black Templars have quietly grown far beyond the limits the Codex Astartes sets for a Chapter. Scattered across countless fleets and campaigns, their true numbers are impossible to tally and are believed to rival those of the ancient Legions themselves, a fact they take care not to advertise, lest the Imperium's own watchdogs take alarm.

This vast, dispersed strength makes the Black Templars one of the most formidable forces in the Imperium, a crusading multitude bound by faith rather than by law. Ten thousand years after Sigismund first swore his oath, his sons crusade still, their black-armoured fleets falling upon the enemies of Mankind wherever they are found. They will not stop. They cannot stop. For the Eternal Crusade knows no victory that ends it: only the next foe, the next world, the next vow taken in the Emperor's holy name.
