Guarding the only sea-passage into the Inner Sea of Ulthuan stands Lothern, jewel of Eataine and greatest port of the High Elf Realms. Built astride the Straits, it commands the mighty Emerald Gate, a titanic sea-wall whose war-towers and enchanted engines can seal the passage against any fleet. Through this gate flows the commerce of the world, for Lothern alone among the cities of the asur throws open its harbours to the ships of mortal men and other races, its Foreigners' Quarter a rare and jealously watched concession.

The city is a wonder of soaring white towers, hanging gardens, and glittering canals, home to the Lothern Sea Guard whose disciplined ranks form the backbone of Ulthuan's mighty navy. Its merchant-princes have grown fabulously wealthy on the trade of gemstones, silks, and secrets, and the Sea Lord who rules here counts among the most powerful nobles of all the asur.

Yet beauty and wealth cannot mask the long twilight of the elven race. Ulthuan is a realm besieged, wracked by the endless hatred of the dark-hearted kin across the ocean and slowly diminished by centuries of war and dwindling numbers. Lothern's fleets patrol seas that grow ever more perilous, and its gate has held against fell armadas that would have drowned the world. For all its splendour, the great sea-gate stands as much a fortress as a marketplace, the shining bulwark of a proud and fading people who guard their island against the rising dark.
