Origins
The Astra Militarum, known in the low tongues of a thousand worlds simply as the Imperial Guard, traces its lineage to the earliest days of the Imperium's founding. When the Emperor set out to reunite the scattered remnants of humanity, He understood that the transhuman warriors of the Legions could never garrison an entire galaxy. A different kind of army was needed: one that could be raised in overwhelming numbers, that could hold ground rather than merely seize it, and that could be replenished without the impossible cost of creating superhuman soldiers. From this necessity grew the greatest military institution ever conceived.
Over ten thousand years, the organisation was formalised, splintered, and rebuilt many times. The catastrophic betrayal that consumed the Imperium's golden age taught a bitter lesson: that no single commander should hold the reins of both armies and fleets. The remedy was deliberate fracture. Armies were separated from the warships that carried them, command authority was divided, and the whole apparatus was bound in coils of ritual and regulation. The result is a force of staggering scale but deliberate inefficiency, designed so that no ambitious general might ever turn it against the Golden Throne.
The Hammer of the Emperor
The doctrine of the Astra Militarum is founded on faith, obedience, and the willingness to spend lives. Its soldiers are told that they are the Hammer of the Emperor, and the metaphor is exact. A hammer is not subtle. It does not parry or feint. It falls, again and again, until whatever stands before it is broken. The Militarum wages war the same way, committing regiment after regiment to the same contested ridge, the same ruined hive, the same blood-soaked trench line, until the enemy is buried beneath the sheer mass of the assault.
Central to this doctrine is the understanding that morale is a weapon and cowardice a contagion. A single soldier who breaks and runs can unravel a company; a company that flees can lose a war. To guard against this, the Militarum embeds political officers within its ranks, and enshrines faith in the Emperor as the bedrock of every trooper's resolve. Chaplains bless the guns, preachers exhort the faithful, and the litany of duty is drummed into every recruit until obedience becomes reflex.
Organization
The Astra Militarum is not a single homogeneous army but an incomprehensibly vast confederation of regiments, each raised from a distinct world and bearing the culture, appearance, and fighting traditions of its home. A world that has earned the right, or been burdened with the obligation, to raise troops for the Imperial tithe delivers its regiments and then loses control of them forever; once mustered, a regiment belongs to the wider war effort and may never see its homeworld again.
At the apex of command sit the great strategists who coordinate campaigns spanning entire sectors, marshalling millions of soldiers and directing the logistics of war on a scale no mortal mind can fully grasp. Beneath them, a rigid hierarchy of generals, colonels, and officers channels orders downward. Regiments are broken into companies, platoons, and squads, and it is at the squad level that the war is truly fought and truly bled for. Supporting the infantry are entire branches devoted to armour, artillery, and the maintenance of the Militarum's countless war machines, the latter tended by the tech-priests of the Machine Cult.
Discipline is upheld by the commissars, feared officers granted the authority to execute any soldier, of any rank, whose weakness threatens the mission. Their presence is a constant reminder that the only paths open to a guardsman are victory or death, and that retreat without sanction leads only to the latter.
Ways of War
The Astra Militarum fights as a combined-arms behemoth. Its infantry advance behind rolling barrages laid down by batteries of self-propelled guns, close under the cover of battle tanks, and press forward regardless of losses. Where other forces prize elegance, the Militarum prizes volume: volume of fire, volume of steel, volume of bodies. A well-conducted Militarum assault resembles less a battle than an industrial process, feeding the enemy into a machine designed to consume them.
Armour is the mailed fist of this war-machine. Squadrons of main battle tanks form the spearhead of countless offensives, while super-heavy behemoths lumber across the battlefield as mobile fortresses, their guns capable of levelling city blocks. Artillery reaches beyond the horizon, and reconnaissance walkers stalk the flanks. Yet for all this materiel, the soldier with a lasgun and a spade remains the irreducible core of the force, the one asset the Imperium can always produce more of.
Role in the 41st Millennium
In the closing centuries of the 41st Millennium, as the galaxy tears itself apart along a rift of screaming warpstuff, the Astra Militarum bears a burden heavier than ever. It garrisons ten thousand worlds, reinforces beleaguered fronts, and dies in numbers that defy comprehension. Against the tide of daemons, xenos, and heretics, it is not the strongest of the Imperium's servants, but it is the most numerous, and often the last line between civilisation and oblivion.
The Militarum will never run out of enemies, and the Imperium will never stop demanding more of its sons and daughters. This is the grim compact at the heart of the faction: that humanity survives only because it is willing to feed its people, endlessly, into the fires of war. The Hammer of the Emperor falls without pause, and it will keep falling until the last star burns cold.
Units
BanebladeLord of War · Super-Heavy TankThe Baneblade is a colossal super-heavy tank, a mobile fortress bristling with weaponry and capable of turning the tide of an entire engagement. Rare, revered, and staggeringly powerful, each is a priceless relic of Imperial engineering. When a Baneblade rolls onto the field, it becomes the anchor around which an entire assault is built, its guns reducing fortifications and formations to smoking ruin.
BasiliskHeavy Support · Self-Propelled ArtilleryThe Basilisk is a self-propelled artillery piece that forms the long arm of the Astra Militarum, hurling shells far beyond the front line to devastate enemy positions before the infantry ever close. A mobile earthshaker gun mounted on a tracked chassis, it embodies the Imperial faith in the rolling barrage. Where the Basilisk speaks, the ground itself is torn apart.
BullgrynsElites · Abhuman Heavy InfantryBullgryns are Ogryns girded for the meat-grinder of close assault, encased in heavy plate and hefting massive slab-shields that lock together into a rolling wall of armour. Behind that walking barricade the Imperium's infantry advance in cover, while the Bullgryns themselves crush the foe with grenadier gauntlets and bone-shattering mauls.
Cadian Shock Troops SquadTroops · Infantry SquadThe Cadian Shock Troops squad is the archetypal line infantry unit of the Astra Militarum, a tightly drilled group of soldiers armed with lasguns and led by a hardened sergeant. They advance under fire, hold ground with disciplined volleys, and form the backbone of Imperial armies across the galaxy. Individually unremarkable, in concert they are a steady and unbreakable wall of massed firepower.
Catachan Jungle FightersTroops · InfantryBred on a death world where even the plants hunt to kill, the Catachan Jungle Fighters are the Imperium's deadliest guerrillas, striking from the undergrowth with knife and lasgun before melting away.
ChimeraDedicated Transport · Armoured TransportThe Chimera is the ubiquitous armoured workhorse of the Astra Militarum, a tracked transport that carries a squad of Guardsmen into the teeth of the enemy behind thick plate and massed lasfire. Rugged, amphibious and endlessly adaptable, it forms the backbone of every mechanised regiment and the chassis for a whole family of war machines.
Command SquadHQ · Command SquadA Command Squad is the beating heart of an Astra Militarum formation, the hand-picked cadre that surrounds an officer and turns his will into action. Vox-operators relay his orders across the battlefield, medics drag the wounded back from death, and standard bearers hold the regiment's colours aloft amid the smoke and slaughter.

Field Ordnance BatteryHeavy Support · ArtilleryHauled into position and dug in by sweating crews, the Field Ordnance Battery anchors the Imperial line with heavy emplaced guns that hammer armour, obliterate infantry and blunt the fiercest assault.
Heavy Weapons SquadHeavy Support · Heavy Weapons TeamWhen the Astra Militarum must shatter armour or scythe down a charging horde, it calls upon the Heavy Weapons Squad. Formed from teams of gunner and loader hauling crew-served weapons, these squads anchor the Imperial firing line with lascannon, autocannon, mortar, missile launcher and heavy bolter, supplying the punishing firepower that line infantry alone cannot.
Characters
Colonel “Iron Hand” StrakenIron HandA brawling, bionic-limbed titan of a man, Colonel “Iron Hand” Straken is the most storied officer the Catachan Jungle Fighters have ever produced. Having clawed his way up from common trooper to command of an entire regiment, he leads from the very front with reckless ferocity, his body a patchwork of gleaming augmetics earned across a lifetime of impossible battles.
Colonel-Commissar Ibram GauntCommander of Gaunt's GhostsColonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt is the commanding officer of the Tanith First-and-Only, the light infantry regiment famed across the Sabbat Worlds as “Gaunt's Ghosts.” A rare fusion of battlefield commander and political officer, he wins improbable victories through guile, marksmanship, and a stubborn loyalty to his soldiers that most of his fellow commissars would count a weakness.
Colour Sergeant Jarran KellCreed's Right HandColour Sergeant Jarran Kell is the loyal shadow of Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed, a booming, indomitable warrior who has spent a lifetime keeping Cadia's greatest commander alive. Where Creed is silent and calculating, Kell is thunder and iron, his amplified war-cries carrying his general's orders over the shriek and din of battle.
Commissar YarrickThe Hero of ArmageddonCommissar Yarrick is the most celebrated political officer in the history of the Astra Militarum, an old and indomitable warrior whose name became synonymous with the defence of a beleaguered world against a green tide. Refusing to die despite grievous wounds and impossible odds, he became a living icon of Imperial resistance. To the soldiers he led he was proof that faith and will could overcome even the most monstrous enemy.
Gunnery Sergeant “Stonetooth” HarkerStonetoothGunnery Sergeant “Stonetooth” Harker is a giant even among the death-world killers of Catachan, a slab of muscle who hefts a heavy bolter as easily as another man shoulders a rifle. Leader of an elite Catachan Devil squad, he has mastered every discipline of war, but given the choice he answers every problem the same way: with his beloved heavy bolter, Payback.
Lord Castellan Ursula J. CreedHeir of CadiaLord Castellan Ursula J. Creed inherited both the title and the crushing burden of her father, Ursarkar E. Creed, after his disappearance, taking up command of the scattered Cadian regiments in an age when their homeworld is already ash. A strategist of ruthless brilliance, she keeps the defiant cry of “Cadia Stands” alive even though the fortress world that first raised it is gone.
Nork DeddogThe Unfailingly LoyalNork Deddog is the most celebrated Ogryn in the Astra Militarum, a mountain of loyal muscle whose devotion to the officers he guards is matched only by his talent for killing. Unusually clever for his kind thanks to arcane mental enhancement, he has shielded hundreds of commanders with his own body and earned a chestful of medals no abhuman was ever meant to wear.
Sly MarboThe One-Man ArmySly Marbo is the most feared lone operative in the Astra Militarum, a Catachan-born killer of near-mythical reputation who wages war entirely alone. Slipping unseen behind enemy lines, he leaves a trail of slaughtered foes and shattered command structures in his wake. So elusive and so lethal is he that many doubt he exists at all, believing him a legend the Imperium tells its enemies to keep them awake at night.
Subfactions
Armageddon Steel LegionForged on a poisoned hive world locked in endless war against the greenskin, the Armageddon Steel Legion are the foremost mechanised infantry of the Astra Militarum. They ride to battle sealed within Chimera transports, their faces hidden behind rebreathers that filter their world's toxic air. Tempered by successive Ork invasions on their own soil, they are grim, methodical, and utterly unyielding.
Cadian Shock TroopsRaised on a fortress world that stood sentinel beside the Imperium's greatest warp storm, the Cadians were the finest line infantry the Astra Militarum ever produced. Bred from birth for war and drilled to machine-like precision, they became the standard by which all other regiments were measured. Their discipline under fire was legendary, and their sacrifice in the defence of their homeworld passed into grim Imperial legend.
Catachan Jungle FightersFrom a death world of predatory flora and monstrous fauna come the Catachans, the deadliest close-quarters and guerrilla fighters in the Astra Militarum. To reach adulthood on Catachan is itself a feat of survival, and those who muster into its regiments bring an animal instinct for ambush, sabotage, and the killing blade. They despise parade-ground discipline but excel where the fighting is dirtiest.
Death Korps of KriegThe Death Korps of Krieg are grim specialists in siege and attrition warfare, drawn from a blasted world that atoned for an ancient rebellion through centuries of self-imposed sacrifice. Masked, silent, and utterly fatalistic, they regard their own deaths as a debt owed to the Emperor. No regiment endures the horrors of trench warfare and grinding sieges with such uncomplaining resolve.
Elysian Drop TroopsThe Elysian Drop Troops descend from the heavens feet-first into the deadliest war zones the Imperium can devise. Light, fast, and lavishly trained in airborne assault, they drop by grav-chute and rappel from Valkyrie carriers to seize objectives far behind enemy lines. Once grounded, they melt into ambush and guerrilla warfare, trusting to mobility where they cannot trust to numbers.
Mordian Iron GuardFrom a tidally locked world of eternal night come the Mordian Iron Guard, perhaps the most rigidly disciplined line infantry in the entire Astra Militarum. Resplendent in immaculate parade dress even amid the carnage of battle, they stand shoulder to shoulder and pour disciplined volleys into the foe. Where lesser men break and flee, the Iron Guard hold their ground, unmoved by terror or slaughter.
Savlar Chem-DogsThe Savlar Chem-Dogs are penal regiments scraped from the poisoned mining moons of Savlar, where convicts toil and die amid toxic chemical deposits. Driven not by discipline but by greed and the promise of plunder, they are filthy, treacherous, and astonishingly effective in the very dirtiest fighting. The Imperium tolerates their crimes only because so few regiments kill with such vicious enthusiasm.
Tallarn Desert RaidersHailing from an irradiated desert world, the Tallarn Desert Raiders are the Astra Militarum's foremost practitioners of mobile and mechanised warfare. Masters of the hit-and-run strike, they wear down their foes with speed, patience, and relentless raiding rather than head-on assault. Their armoured columns strike from nowhere and are gone before the dust settles.
Valhallan Ice WarriorsBred in the frozen warrens of a shattered ice world, the Valhallan Ice Warriors are masters of attrition, siege, and the long war of endurance. They wed massed artillery to relentless infantry assault, spending lives without hesitation to grind an enemy down to nothing. Cold, stoic, and inured to every hardship, they have no equal when a campaign becomes a contest of sheer, unbreakable will.
Vostroyan FirstbornThe Vostroyan Firstborn muster from a frozen, smoke-wreathed forge world whose people labour under a debt of shame ten thousand years old. In perpetual atonement for withholding their armies during the Imperium's darkest hour, every family surrenders its eldest son to the Astra Militarum, arming him with heirloom weapons and ornate crimson-and-gold war-plate. They fight with the sombre pride of soldiers forever paying for an ancestral sin.
